Dolmabahçe (17. yüzyılın başlarında burada bir villa inşa edilmişti ), Ermeni Balyan ailesinin üyelerinin yaptığı sarayın adıdır. 1843-1856 yılları arasında Sultan Abdülmecit için inşa edildi. O zamanlar Türkiye kötü durumdaydı padişahın parayı ekonomiye aktarması gerekiyordu; ama o, parçalanmakta olan imparatorluğun büyüklüğünü bir sarayla göstermeye karar verdi ve mazlum halkını bunun faturasını ödemeye zorladı.
