Tempo Dergisi Mayıs sayısında bir ilke imza attı. Dergiyle birlikte hiç yayınlanmamış fotoğraflardan oluşan Kurtuluş Destanı'nı anlatan kitapçık okurlarına hediye etti. Küçücük yaşlardan itibaren beynimize yerleştirilen basmakalıp kahramanlık öyküleri, pek çoğu birbirine benzeyen zafer fotoğrafları, Değerleri yok mu? Elbette var. Ama bir ülkenin nasıl kurulduğunu anlamak için bundan çok daha fazlasına da ihtiyaç var.

Araştırmacı Atilla Oral'ın yıllardır kendini adayarak topladığı işgal ve milli mücadele fotoğrafları, ihtiyaç duyduğumuzdan çok daha fazlasını bize veriyor. Biliyoruz, aklınız Kurtuluş Savaşı'yla ilgili pek çok bilgiyle dolu. Kendinize karşı samimi olun, gerçekten neyi ne kadar hatırlıyor ya da biliyorsunuz? Tüm savaşları, anlaşmaları, tarihlerini aklınızda tutmak güç olabilir. Milli mücadele döneminde neler yaşandığını, o dönemin belgeleri, en çok da fotoğrafları anlatabilir.

Pek çok şeyi unutsanız da, gördüğünüz fotoğrafları unutmazsınız. İstanbul'da bugün keyifle yürüdüğünüz Galata ve Beyoğlu'nda bir zaman işgal güçlerinin yaptığı törenlere bakın; 'Yaz gelse de bir an önce oralara kaçsak dediğiniz Ege'nin nasıl darmadağın olduğuna bakın; düşmana karşı erkek gibi direnen Kara Fatma'nın, Bodrum'daki işgal güçlerini kurşunlarıyla püskürten Ümmüşen Hanım'ın gözlerine bakın. Bu ülkenin bugünlere nasıl geldiğini, düşünmeden ezberlediğiniz pek çok sözden, şiirden daha iyi anlatacaklar size. Milli mücadelenin başlamasının 90'ıncı yıldönümünde, bu fotoğraflar geçmişle bugün arasında köprü olacak.
